Job description
We are currently seeking a part-time Technical Demonstrator in Scienceto assist in the provision and demonstration of specialist technical and practical equipment, processes and techniques in support of academic and commercial programmes across the School Technical Services (Part-time 30 hours per week)
About the role
Within your role as Technician, you will provide comprehensive technical support to in-house, visiting and off-campus teaching and production work as required, (including support for curricular and extra-curricular productions where appropriate), ensuring that best and safe professional practice is followed at all times. Your responsibilities will also include maintaining equipment, managing loans and returns, and adhering strictly to Health & Safety procedures, as well as supervising students in research projects which may include the development of laboratory procedures.
In addition, you will work closely with other technical demonstrators in devising proposals for equipment / software upgrade, replacement and expansion. Liaising with the authorised signatory to raise orders on the relevant budget code, taking delivery of ordered goods and checking all related data and records before payment is authorised.
About you
- A relevant Science Degree or equivalent.
- Significant practical experience in application of the relevant discipline in a commercial or educational setting
- Teaching or demonstration experience in higher education or capability to do so.
- Previous experience of manual handling.
- Ability to maintain specialist equipment
- Experience of undertaking Microbiological techniques and analysis, maintaining stock cultures and media preparation.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures and responsibilities in the specialist area
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to work successfully as part of team
- Excellent organisational/administrative skills, appropriate to the demands of the position
- Ability to respond flexibly and reliably to complex workloads and prioritise conflicting demands.
Additional information
This is a part-time 0.8 FTE role at 30 hours per week
Please note that some evening and weekend working may be required for this role. The arrangement of working hours will be agreed in advance with the line manager.
