The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy is one of the University's top-performing research and teaching departments in the University. We're proud of our collaborative, inclusive, and forward-thinking community, housed in one of the most modern facilities in West Cambridge.
As Departmental Health and Safety Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring our department remains a safe and compliant space for innovation and discovery. Working closely with the senior leadership team, you'll provide expert guidance on general, laser, biological, and chemical safety, supporting a diverse community of around 30 academic staff, 60 professional services staff, 80 postdoctoral researchers, and 150 postgraduate students.
Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as the primary contact for all health and safety matters
- Providing technical safety advice and support across the department
- Developing and maintaining safety documentation and guidance
- Promoting a positive safety culture through clear communication and collaboration
- Networking with other safety professionals both within the University and the wider research community.
We're looking for someone with:
- A meticulous eye for detail and strong communication skills
- Confidence in engaging with a wide range of people, from researchers to contractors
- A problem-solving mindset and the ability to adapt to changing needs
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative when needed.
The successful applicant will be educated to a post-graduate degree level or equivalent, having significant experience working within a research environment. They will have demonstrable knowledge of health and safety regulations, including practical experience in managing all aspects of H&S, experience in delivering training and an understanding of how to successfully merge good safety practices with good research. The role holder will represent the Department at any University safety/compliance activity or events.
