About the role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for a Mechanical Workshop and Laboratory Technician to assist with the delivery of mechanical and electro-mechanical services associated with the testing apparatus and equipment for researching and teaching.
The successful candidate will be based in the Department’s Geotechnical Engineering laboratory. They will also be part of the team responsible for providing general technical support in the Department.
This is a full-time, open-ended post.
What you would be doing:
You will contribute to the delivery of mechanical workshop services within the Geotechnical laboratories, including assisting in equipment design and operating specialist machinery to support the development of new techniques.
With a strong understanding of the safe use of equipment and materials, you will help monitor laboratory users to ensure Health and Safety standards are upheld.
Your role will also involve providing technical support through the design, construction, assembly, and installation of specialist apparatus used in hydro-mechanical and thermal soil testing.
In collaboration with technical, academic, and research staff, you will support the overall management of the physical infrastructure across the Geotechnical workshop and laboratories.
What we are looking for:
- A BTEC Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering is essential together with completion of a relevant recognised apprenticeship.
- You will have the ability to undertake a wide range of mechanical skills using lathes, CNC milling machines, pillar drills and similar equipment.
- You will have experience of using Solidworks, CAD and/or other relevant software packages, and will be comfortable with using your own initiative, innovation and developing ideas.
- You will also have the ability to work both individually and as part of a multidisciplinary team together with a positive attitude to work.
- Experience of working in a laboratory environment is desirable.
