We are happy to invite applications for the post of Workshop Technician, working across the Faculty of Science.
About the role
This hands-on and practical post is an exciting opportunity to support and enhance world-class research and teaching. As part of our Technical Services team the successful candidate will work in our bespoke workshops, research labs, teaching facilities, plant rooms and communal facilities (such as greenhouses, fish facility, instrumentation spaces and environment controlled rooms).
Core tasks will include providing an electrical and mechanical-focused service, where the capacity to fault find and trouble shoot on a wide range of scientific equipment is essential.
The post holder will also work on the construction and/or modification of specialised items for teaching and research. They will be competent and confident in the use of a wide range of hand-held workshop tools. They will also be practiced and skilled in the safe use of larger workshop equipment, including pillar drills, bandsaws, routers lathes and milling machines. Having a strong electrical skill-set is key and PAT in research labs will be a key part of this post. The ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions, is essential to this post, as is a proven capacity to work from in house or manufacturer technical drawings/ instructions. A self-motivated person who has experience working unsupervised would be an ideal fit.
The post holder will also have a good working knowledge and awareness of health and safety in a workshop or scientific setting.
About you
Candidates with electrical, mechanical and general workshop experience are encouraged to apply. Significant-experience of working with a wide-range of workshop-based tools and equipment is essential. Flexibility, great communication, attention to detail and a capacity to problem solve are crucial for this hands-on and active post.

£26,338 to £29,959. Grade 5, per annum
